Howdy All!
This is Reis again...here for the final installment in my long series
of
reviews from my tour experience over break. Let's put ourselves back in
Louisiana for a few minutes, shall we?
     First, the setlist...
I-Rift/Foam/Bouncin/Maze/Guelah/Paul&Solace*/Sample in a Jar/Runaway Jim/
Lawn Boy@/Cavern@
II-Axcilla/Curtain/Mound/Split Open/Mikes Groove/Glide/My Sweet
One/FEFY/HYH/
Terrapin/Squirming Coil/Sweet Adeline Enc:Fire

The first set was very energetic, and seemed a bit fast, but was
solid
playing-wise. Page was psyched and it showed. His solos were my
favorites of
the night. Maze was explosive, and Trey's solo toward the end had a bit
more
build-up to it than usual. I like the way he can extend a build-up solo
into
a 5+ minute jam sometimes and have the whole audience erupting by the
climax.
I always love the choreography in Guelah, and they were a bit more bouncy
than
usual. The few times I've seen this one, Mike has looked like he was just
doin
it to go through the motions, but tonight he looked like he was having fun
with
it. I starred Paul & Silas because I know for a fact that Trey sang
verses
from *both* versions of the song on this night. When he started out it
was
Paul, but he sang Hall in the 2nd verse. I was right up there in the
front and
specifically watched his mouth during the verses, as I did in Miami when
he
sang "Fat" in BFFCFM. So I guess his singing Hall again was a bit of a
brain
phart on his part. By the way, I stopped into a record store in New
Orleans
while I was there, and I was looking through the Earl Scruggs albums they
had.
On one of the live albums, the song was called "Bound in Jail All Night
Long."
but I hope this doesn't stir up more repetitive comments about it. Anyway
the
solos in Runaway Jim were killer as usual, and Sample is a great tune, but
the
highlight of the set was rather obvious. Carl Gearhart from the Giant
Country
Horns came out to play trumpet on "Lawn Boy' and "Cavern." The playing on
Lawn Boy was nicer than the muted solo on The Arrowhead tape, and Page
dropped
his falsetto for the last few words of the song, making it the finest
version
I've heard of this one ever. I tossed my Bacchus 25th anniversary Mardi
Gras
beads up to Gears when he got on stage...he deserved them. Cavern was a
great
set closer with his playing.
Set two started with a bang, as Axcilla got the whole crowd jumping.
Curtain was a real spacy version. It almost seems like they're trying to
revamp this one. I hope they're not getting bored with playing it...it's
one
of my favorites. The time in Mound fucked everybody's rhythm up except of
course the band. Fish had a lot of fun jumping into the odd-time during
Mike's
composition part at the end. The Split Open was incredible. It seems
like the
jamming at the end is getting longer with every time they do it. Mike's
Groove
was nice, as Mike laid off the distortion again and just slapped it up
Cajun
style. Page was all over the organ on the groove. It was fun to see more
than
just feet dangling in the air during Hydrogen. Being so close to the
stage, I
was able to see the fingering, and it was quite nice. Glide and My Sweet1
both
prompted the long pauses at the end before the last word of the songs. I
love
when they freeze for almost a minute before they sing "glide" or "name."
The
Fire encore was cool, but not as sweet solo-wise as say, the NYE version.
Oh
yeah, I almost forgot to mention FEFY. The guitar solo was amazing as
usual,
but I was wondering if the two songs were in the same key. The FEFY solo
sounded just like the one in Runaway Jim (which is the 2nd of the two
songs I
refer to...sorry for the confusion). Is this true? Nevertheless is was
nice
to hear. A great show, and maybe my last for a long time. Well, that's
the
last of my long reviews...hope I didn't bore anyone. Later!
                                (*:REIS:*)

Please, we have no regrets!!
