2/13/93 Bob Carpenter Center, UDel., Newark, DE Another show that I
would have attended had I got "it" to Phish by this
time. Doh. I love the eerie Bass theme from Mike in the pre-Nirvana
segment, which, by the way, is VERY long and stunningly
gorgeous... The theme that Mike was on is picked up by Trey at one
point. Nirvana at 3:14, but only after a small Trey flub. ;(
This was still a very nice pre-Nirvana segment. Mike's solo section
is typical (he floats notes up and down the 'doc... nothing
funky). Mike's bass in the pre-charge is niiiiiice, though. Trey's
jamming around The Notes is very good, but certainly not stellar
(given what he's done in the past and will likely do in the future!).
"Boy" at 6:34. Trey effectively teases "Shaft" in the
WUDMTF segment, by repetitively playing That Note that he does in The
Albany YEM (and other places) in the proper
rhythm. Tramps jam is very inspiring, with great drums from Fish and
fiery Hammond action from Page!! Lots of action in here.
Jam segment kicks in at 10:25, with Trey actively and mellifluously
noodling right from the start. Around 11 minutes, he gets into
a theme of sorts that is very funky and reminiscent of the 70s.. ;)
I don't think it's a tease. At 11:30 or so, Mike and Page are
gone and it is all Trey and Fish just wailing together. Just jamming
hard! At 12:20 Mike and Page come right back in
(meanwhile Trey and Fish are still *on fire*). Around 12:45, Trey's
soloing is in the typical YEM hose 'em off a la Carlos
Santana mode, and hose us off he does. Bass and drums at 13:40, and
it is very dull at first. Mike is VERRRRRY
LOOOOOOW and repetitive.. it is mostly just repetitive and dry at first..
after 30 seconds or so, though, he climbs out of this
and funks out on this groovy theme!! Very melodious. I don't think
this is a tease of something in particular, but it sure as hell is
a melodious funky theme (with some great fills). Fish is completely
mad in here, too. Final segment at 15:13. Vocal jam kicks in
at 15:27. The vocal jam is extremely tonal and harmonious, but not
necesarily pleasing. There is a nice jam on the Lion Sleeps
Tonight theme, but it is argubaly just too damn long. Total time 20:12.
A slightly above average YEM, imo.. C+/B- rating.
Definitely not one to seek, imo. two cents
