Very good SOAM opens this set! Remarkably strong for April '92, even!
Uh, the opening of YEM is hysterically sloppy (Trey bursts out
laughing). Fish comes in hitting the high-hat in the opening, as if
he'd forgotten that it would be YEM in this slot (it sounds like he
wanted to play Maze). And Trey opens up in the wrong key, sloppily
hitting the notes. And Page screws around, too, on the keys.
Very
amusing opening. It isn't really decent for about 30 seconds,
but
even then Trey isn't very tight. Nirvana (after a decent build,
but
nothing crazy) at 2:19. Mike's solo-section is remarkably dark
and
spooky, like many other versions in the 1990-92 period (he hardly hits
any notes, and has some weird frazzled effect turned ON). The
pre-charge section is typically good (unremarkable). Trey's first
shot
at the Note at 4:27 is hit well, and he jams well around it after
sustaining it for a little bit. The second shot at the Note is
cleanly hit but not sustained.. just jammed on.
"Boy" at 5:48 after a fine scream. DOH.. Trey goes "SSshhhh..God"
(tries to say Shit before God). Only heard him do this one other
time.. (I think in '88) Weird jamming amidst the WUDMTF segment..
what is that? Sounds like Trey teases something, but I don't
recognize the theme (sounds somewhat akin to "Ob La Di" I guess, but
it ain't Ob La Di). Tramps segment starts around 7:50 or something,
and Page noodles well in the opening. Mike is signalling the
trampolines moves. Page jams very well in this tramps segment,
and
Mike and Trey and Fish lock into a thematic groove that honestly
sounds very similar to "Another One Bites the Dust," but isn't it (it
is extremely similar to it, however).
At 10:27 the jam segment begins with everyone carrying on this
thematic Another Bites The Dust -like groove, and with Trey chording
&
noodling a bit. This is the theme for this YEM jam, it looks like.
It is STRONG but not endearingly melodious, in my opinion.
By 12 minutes the jam is in fiery YEM jam segment mode, and it starts
taking on an Oye Como Va flavor. The jam shortly quiets down,
though! By 12:30 everyone has quieted down (but the rhythm is
still
strong), and Trey starts preciously noodling... Fish alters the
rhythm into something more bluesy (and Trey appears to almost tease
"Who Knows" by Hendrix, fwiw), but still keeps the groove PUMPED!
Indeed, by around 14 minutes, Page Trey Fish and Mike start
RAGING, for what is undoubtedly going to be the conclusion. Wild
jam
segment..
B&D at 14:25. Mike solos funkily and tightly, hitting plenty
of
notes. Fish accompanies ferociously... YEAH!! =^]
Add this
one to the list of PHHHHHHAAAAAAT B&D segments!!!
Closing WUDMTF segment at 16:03 or so, and Mike and Fish jam a bit in
the opening. Vocal jam at 16:19, and it begins at a very fast,
danceable pace (it is, in other words, an "active" vocal jam ;).
They
are definitely repeating different words in here.. sounds like "Slam
Us" at one point. And I hear "Watch me" around 17:20, which appears
to become "What." Which becomes "Watson" maybe.. and this just
breaks
down into typical vocal chaos. Some throat clearing. Some
laughter.
Some f&cked up stuff in this damn vocal jam!! This is not
to be heard
by the faint of heart... ends on whinnying noises (which I've heard
them do before in a vocal jam somewhere). Total time 19:17.
This YEM was very weird. The very opening was terrible (but amusing),
the opening segment was fine, the tramps segment was unusually upbeat
and good, the jam and B&D segments were AWESOME, and the vocal
jam was
an unusually *#$T#FU$^D up vocal jam. There was a lot of rhythmic
screwing around in the jam segment, too. The theme everyone played
for awhile in the tramps&jam segments was catchy but not melodiously
charming. This version was still pretty good.. B- rating, meaning
it
is almost worth a
B Awesome. Contains
very intense, melodic
jamming, with lots of energy
and creativity
(but not necessarily all
the time). You may
want to get a tape of it, and hear for yourself.
in my opinion.
