5/8/94 The Backyard, Austin, TX There's an EXCELLENT Antelope in this
set, fwiw. Much better than 5/4/94's, even
though that one wasn't bad, either. The YEM starts out shaky, with
Trey somewhat missing some of the opening notes. The
pre-Nirvana section begins around 1:25 or so (da usual time), and there's
some faint whistling noises (see Bowie 12/29/94 and
several other jams). Lots of aud noise (was this a really small club,
btw?). Not that exciting a pre-Nirvana section.. noisy
crowd. Nirvana comes at 2:53. Mike's solo-section is rather queer..
he employs an awry effect (and he only plays a handful of
notes). Nice pre-charge segment! Good shots at the Notes and nice jamming
around 'em.. "Boy" at 6:14. Decent
BMGS/WUDMTF segment. Page kinda toys with the Mission Impossible theme
at one point in the tramps segment.. (they
weren't on tramps, though.. no signals from Mike, and Trey is accompanying
Page with notes & chords here and there). A very
nice tramps jam with the accompaniment.. around 10 minutes Mike starts
getting impressively funky, too! Nice extended
"tramps segment" jam!! Jam segment begins at 11:11 with Trey noodling
a bit.. jam gets quiet fast, though.. and by 11:30 it is
only Trey noodling away with Fish lightly accompanying. Very quiet
around 12 minutes. Trey is just mellifluously noodling..
Trey's turned on a form of the Leslie effect, it sounds like (same
effect that he employed during the Bangor Tweezer doing the
Exceptionally Cheesy Jam of that version.. you know the deliberately
goofy Trey-led circus-like bozo jam I'm talking about).
Within a minute the groove returns more strongly.. Page and Mike return...
At 13:53 it is just Fish releasing a very funky almost
Foam-like non-YEM rhythm, and Trey does a "Shaft" tease by saying "Who's
the private dick who's the sex machine to all the
chicks." (see also 12/9/95 YEM) Ultra funky, just awesome FUNK around
14:40!! Sweeet jam! Hmmm.. Closing WUDMTF
segment at 15:26 or so. So, no B&D segment... that YEM jam didn't
climax at all, though, really. :( Vocal jamming within
twenty seconds, though, as usual. Very active vocal jam, that grooves
well.. until around 17:30 or so, when it gets rather
monotonous. And dull. Yawn (18:20). Lots of audience chatter during
this... Starts getting more interesting after a minute.. Still
not much of an impressive vocal jam as far as these go, imo. At 20:40
they start vocal jamming the opening to Halley's Comet..
rather nicely.. changing the key a bit in the process back into its
appropriate key. Great segue! =^] B- rating for this YEM..
nice tramps segment jamming, and some genuinely funky jamming for a
minute or two in the jam segment. Still, not quite an
"awesome" version, imo. two cents charlie
